Debbie Allen’s spirit and enthusiasm for what children can achieve if given the opportunity has delighted students, their families and countless volunteers who made the first three years of the Debbie Allen Dance Institute an unforgettable experience and a huge success. Students with little previous dance training soared to unthinkable heights, while more experienced students had their skills nurtured and pushed to a boundless limit.

An accomplished dancer, singer, choreographer, actor, producer and director, Ms. Allen received two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her role on the hit TV series Fame, two Tony nominations for her roles in the revivals of Sweet Charity and West Side Story and received the first Lena Horne Award for Career Achievement. She was also recently honored with the Texas Medal of the Arts for dance. A graduate of Howard University who trained at the Ballet Nacional de Mexico, Ms. Allen continues to work extensively in television, film and theatre. She produced the critically acclaimed film Amistad with Steven Spielberg and Colin Wilson and has choreographed the annual Academy Awards for five years. Ms. Allen has written two children’s books, Brothers of the Knight and Dancing in the Wings.

The Debbie Allen Dance Institute promotes dance as a foundation to nurture the creative spirit within each student while stressing the importance of all art disciplines for lifelong success in academic and personal achievements. The institute was developed and is produced by the Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration Fort Worth. Imagination Celebration and the Debbie Allen Dance Institute share a common mission to create unique learning experiences for children through educational-based arts programming.
