The 10th Annual Debbie Allen Dance Institute will be held in June 8 through 21, 2008 at Texas Christian University. Enrollment is open to students, ages 7-21, who have a desire to learn or have an innate talent for dance, and who, regardless of previous dance experience, aspire to study under the artistic direction of Debbie Allen, award-winning star of stage, film, and television; acclaimed choreographer; director; and producer. Ms. Allen has worked with Imagination Celebration leadership to put together a team of some of the world's leading performers and dance masters in an exciting 2-week long institute. This program was created in 1996 in a partnership between Imagination Celebration Fort Worth and Ms. Allen and is the only intensive performing arts workshop institute in the world that carries Ms. Allen's name and artistic direction. All students take classes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and study dance disciplines such as ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip hop, African, and Flamenco. Scholarships are available based on financial need.

This program is responsible for many changed lives and has not only introduced several thousand students to dance with some of the world's masters, but has launched careers. Alums from this program are dancing with such companies as the American Ballet Theater, The Kirov, The San Francisco Ballet, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Bruce Wood Dance Company, on Broadway, in major motion pictures, and on cruise ships! Ms. Allen has utilized this template in the creation of her yearlong Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles which is in its eighth year.

Debbie Allen’s spirit and enthusiasm for what children can achieve if given the opportunity has delighted students, their families and countless volunteers who made the first three years of the Debbie Allen Dance Institute an unforgettable experience and a huge success. Students with little previous dance training soared to unthinkable heights, while more experienced students had their skills nurtured and pushed to a boundless limit.

Debbie Allen, a Houston native, knows no limits. An accomplished dancer, singer, choreographer, actor, producer and director, Ms. Allen received two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her role on the hit TV series Fame, two Tony nominations for her roles in the revivals of Sweet Charity and West Side Story and received the first Lena Horne Award for Career Achievement. She was also recently honored with the Texas Medal of the Arts for dance. A graduate of Howard University who trained at the Ballet Nacional de Mexico, Ms. Allen continues to work extensively in television, film and theatre. She produced the critically acclaimed film Amistad with Steven Spielberg and Colin Wilson and has choreographed the annual Academy Awards for five years. Ms. Allen has written two children’s books, Brothers of the Knight and Dancing in the Wings.

The Debbie Allen Dance Institute promotes dance as a foundation to nurture the creative spirit within each student while stressing the importance of all art disciplines for lifelong success in academic and personal achievements. The institute was developed and is produced by the Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration Fort Worth. Imagination Celebration and the Debbie Allen Dance Institute share a common mission to create unique learning experiences for children through educational-based arts programming.

Enrollment is open to students with a talent or interest in dance who, regardless of experience, aspire to study under the artistic direction of Debbie Allen and outstanding professional instructors in a stimulating learning environment.
