Dear Bruce,

I'm getting ready to leave for San Antonio for the Texas Music Educators Conference but wanted to get this information to you regarding what we did at CMM in relation to the Cliburn.

In Music Class
--Showed Jane McGarry interview of Van Cliburn. (I taped from TV)
--Showed Cliburn Competition Video given to us
--Cliburn bulletin board (on-going)
--Van Cliburn’s picture displayed on wall
--Listened to Van Cliburn cassette recording
--Studied about Susurnu Aoyagi (our adopted competitor)
--Did a compare/contrast Venn diagram and paragraph writing on Chopin (the composer we were studying then) and Susumu Aoyagi
--Listened to some piano & piano concerto music
--Susumu Aoyagi visited our campus and gave a concert for the entire student body and staff.
--A reception was held after the concert which featured musical cookies, cake, and music decorations
--A. drawing was held for 3-6 grades and the names of 4 students from each class were drawn and attended the reception
--A. photo and autograph party was held--Aoyagi was photographed with each student at the reception and signed autographs
--Presented Susumu Aoyagi with Como Montessori T-shirt and cup

In 4/5/6 Classrooms

--Reading material was read and discussed
--Students answered the questions
--Time lines were made regarding Van Cliburn and the Competition
--Geography/Map skills were reinforced by locating competitor countries on the map
--Math problems were created by teachers--tying in with New Standards
--All activities motivated interest in music and pride in Ft. Worth

In Art Class --Students created signs and banners which were put all around the school to publicize the Cliburn competition and to welcome our adopted competitor
--A Wish Book was made by each class wishing Susumu Aoyagi good luck and to remind him of his visit to Como Montessori

In the Library
--Students made several graffiti boards which were displayed around the school
--Computer resources were accessed also
--Books on music were read to the student
--Books on music were made available for check-out and research sources

I hope this is the kind of stuff you needed. Sorry it took a while--I had to get information from other teachers and I'm busy as a bunch of gnats getting ready for Black History, Symphony, Opera, and In service here 2/16 and leaving town for the Convention 2/11-2/16!
