Sedrick Huckaby

I had participated in many of Imagination Celebration’s student programs throughout elementary and middle school. I remember so many of them, but then I was selected to enroll in the one that would forever change my life. It is called the Imagination Celebration Young Artist Apprenticeship Program and it gives young people in high school the chance to work with professional artists in a studio setting. Through this apprenticeship, I met painter Ron Tomlinson who was the lead artist master for this very special in depth study program of Imagination Celebration Fort Worth. I was able to be a part of this program throughout my high school years. We met each Sunday for three hours with many different practicing professional artists from varied visual arts disciplines.

From the time I was a young child my focus had been on drawing, but Ron Tomlinson showed me the power of expression that oil paint could possess. I have been painting ever since.

After graduation from O.D.Wyatt high school, I was given the opportunity to follow Ron Tomlinson to Texas Wesleyan University to pursue a degree in fine art. After my first year there – with the help of recommendations from Ron, and Ms. Ginger Head, and Ms. Beverly Fletcher - I was accepted at Boston University. After graduating from Boston University I was accepted into the art school at Yale University, with a full scholarship. Through Yale, I was able to travel and work throughout Europe in the cities of Paris, Madrid, and Rome. I was able to do all of this before I turned 25. After this time I decided to return home to Fort Worth. Not long after my arrival Imagination Celebration asked me if I would become the lead Master Artist for the Young Artist Apprenticeship Program as Ron Tomlinson was for many years before me. I accepted this position and continued in this role for 5 years. It was a wonderful experience to be able to work with these young artists and to give back to them through this program.

Today, I continue my large-scale paintings in my Fort Worth home studio, which I built with my father and brother. It is in a house next door to the one I grew up in. It has been an inspiration to come home to my childhood neighborhood after being given the opportunity to study and refine my art at Boston University and Yale and then to travel all over the world. The art I was doing was - and is - about the place I was from. So I decided to come back. I am married to Letitia, who is also an artist, specializing in photo-based art. We have two children, Sonny who is 4 and Halle Lujah who is 2.

“I don’t know if I would be an artist if I hadn’t participated in Imagination Celebration. It played a pivotal part in my artistic career. I knew I liked art, but I didn’t know I wanted to be an artist. Imagination Celebration helped me decide to be a professional.

*Note: Sedrick Huckaby’s works of art are exhibited in galleries and private collections across the U.S. He was recently selected as a Guggenheim Fellow. He continues to play a vital role in the life of Imagination Celebration FortWorth.
