Growing up I didn’t have much guidance. I grew up in a bad neighborhood and I didn’t care about school or grades. To my belief I was never going to need any of it. I thought I was just going to grow up to be a thug. My mom guided me and cared so much for us, but had enough issues worrying about my older brother and house work. My dad worked a lot to keep us stable financially but it seemed like we never could catch up. I didn’t have anyone else to look to for advice so I did what I wanted. As time went on I seemed to get worse and worse. I started skipping class a lot more even through high school. I did have some guidance in middle school from other programs but at the time I still didn’t believe I would graduate. Then at the end of my junior year of high school during the summer my life changed. It all started when one of my teachers told me to help out at school I thought “sure I have time to kill.”While at the school one of my mentors and a good friend of mine, Felitia Lee, found a notice from Imagination Celebration Fort Worth that the organization had been given a full scholarship to select one Fort Worth student for a once in a lifetime opportunity to go on an expedition to the North Pole. There was an online application. I thought why not, I have nothing to lose. Two weeks later I was told that I had been selected for this amazing opportunity which was given to Imagination Celebration from an organization called Students on Ice and then it was given to me! They mailed the tickets and sent a requirement list to me. Everything was great until I read the list and realized that not only did I not have anything on the list, but I had never even heard of the stuff I needed. As quickly as my hope rose, it fell. “I don’t have money to buy the things I need, I thought! “ Then I got a phone call from a very loving lady named Ginger Head. She said that she was with Imagination Celebration and that she had heard about me and was so happy that I had been chosen for this trip. She had also heard of my financial predicament and offered to help pay for everything. I asked what is the catch and she responded, “Imagination Celebration just wants to help open a very special young man’s eyes to the world. The only catch is that you must learn all you can and you must take this experience to make you a better person. We know you have great potential and that you will do good things with this opportunity.” Imagination Celebration and my teachers helped me get everything I could have needed and then more. I went on the trip, and on that trip in the North Pole, I did open my eyes. I realized that there is more to the world than Fort Worth. There is a whole world out there. I returned a changed man. I came back home and I tried hard, I applied myself, and graduated all thanks to this gift to Imagination Celebration from Students on Ice and then to me!
