The Debbie Allen Dance Institute promotes dance as a foundation to nurture the creative spirit within each student while stressing the importance of all art disciplines for lifelong success in academic and personal achievements. The Institute was created in 1998 through a partnership formed between Debbie Allen, legendary choreographer, director, star of stage, TV and Film, and Ginger Head, Founder and Executive Director of the Kennedy Center Imagination Celebration Fort Worth. ICFW produces the Institute, now in its 12th year, each summer.
Ms. Allen has utilized this template in the creation of her yearlong Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, which is in its ninth year. Many students from the Texas Program have gone on to study at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, at both the summer intensive and the year-round program.
The Imagination Celebration Fort Worth Debbie Allen Dance Institute, under the creative direction of Ms. Allen continues to be the only program in the world, carrying Ms. Allen’s name, outside of Los Angeles. In 2008 the program was honored with the Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities. This year for the first time, the traditional 2 week program held in Fort Worth at TCU will expand to 4 weeks, with a 2nd two week session to be held at the Booker T. Washington School of the Performing Arts in Dallas.
The Program has been responsible for many changed lives, has introduced several thousand students to dance with some of the world's masters. It has launched many careers. Alums from this program are studying at Julliard, dancing with such companies as the American Ballet Theater, The Kirov, The San Francisco Ballet, The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, Texas Ballet Theatre, on Broadway, in major motion pictures, and on stages across the world! Ms. Allen has utilized this template in the creation of her yearlong Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles which is in its ninth year.
It has been a tremendous honor for Imagination Celebration Fort Worth to work with Ms. Allen, whose spirit and enthusiasm for what children can achieve if given the opportunity. It has delighted students, their families and countless volunteers each year and made the Debbie Allen Dance Institute an unforgettable experience and a huge success. Students with little previous dance training soar to unthinkable heights, while more experienced students’ skills are nurtured and pushed to a boundless limit.
